Some random notes on the Coolpix 5000 |

First sense of the camera on taking it out of the box: wow, this thing is small. The size affects the ergonomics, because there are so many buttons on the back, yet only a small area to manuever in order to operate them. The "joystick" style control seems a bit too small to me; I liked the 990's better. After using the camera in a few different places, I like it. It's great to finally have a hotshoe to put a bubble level. It's hard to get used to the control display being on the back instead of the top (where it is for most Nikon cameras). The primary improvement over the CP990 seems to be the speed of shooting and of course, the resolution. |

The flash seems adequate, and the red eye reduction feature certainly
works 1000 times better than the Coolpix 990. |

Design notes |

While the general design strikes some people as ugly, I think it is OK. The important thing is that the location of various functions (such as the CF slot, the hotshoe, the battery compartment) is logical and well thought out. I like the metal case, and in fact the general feel of the camera is very good. |
